Do you need to recheck your bags on a connecting flight? Usually not.
On one ticket, checked bags are usually tagged through to your final destination, so you don't see them during the layover. You collect and recheck them in three cases: arriving in the US from abroad (at your first US airport, after customs), on separate tickets, and when the connection means changing airports.

When you'll see your bags on a layover
| Situation | Recheck? | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| One ticket, domestic connection | No | Bags go through to your final destination |
| One ticket, international connection staying airside | No | Bags go through, you just change gates |
| Arriving in the US from abroad | Yes | Collect at baggage claim, clear customs, drop at the recheck belt right after |
| Arriving from abroad and connecting domestically in some other countries | Often | Some countries, such as Mexico and Australia, clear bags at the first airport |
| Separate tickets (self-transfer) | Yes | Collect, check in again with the second airline, clear security |
| Changing airports (e.g. JFK to LGA, CDG to ORY) | Yes | Collect, travel across town, check in again |
How to tell before you fly
- Look at your bag tag: the three-letter code on the tag is where the bag will next come out. If it's your final destination, it's checked through.
- Ask at check-in: agents can tell you, and on separate tickets some airlines that partner will check bags through anyway.
- Check where you enter a country: if your layover is your first stop in the US, you'll recheck there.
Bag recheck in the US, step by step
- Clear passport control.
- Collect your bags at baggage claim. The belt number is on the screens and in LYVR.
- Walk through customs with them.
- Drop them at the connecting bags or recheck belt just past customs. Bags already tagged to your final destination need no new check-in.
- Go through TSA security and on to your gate.
All of that usually takes 45 to 90 minutes, which is why US international arrivals need 2.5 to 3 hour layovers. LYVR adds each step to your plan.
US airports with a bag recheck on international arrivals
The rest of the answer.
Do I need to pick up my luggage during a layover?
Usually not on one ticket: bags go through to your final destination. You do pick them up arriving in the US from abroad, on separate tickets, and when you change airports.
Do I need to recheck my bags on an international to domestic flight in the US?
Yes. At your first US airport you collect checked bags, take them through customs and drop them at the recheck belt just past customs before going through TSA security.
Do I need to recheck bags on a domestic layover?
No, not on one ticket. Domestic bags are checked through to your final destination.
What if I booked my flights on separate tickets?
Plan to collect your bags and check in again with the second airline, which also means leaving security and coming back through it. Leave at least 3 hours, more on an international connection.
Can I get my checked bags during an overnight layover?
Usually not if they're checked through. Some airlines will short-check bags to the layover city on request, but most won't, so pack what you need for the night in your carry-on.
How long does a bag recheck take?
The drop itself takes a few minutes. Waiting for bags at claim is the slow part, often 20 to 40 minutes after landing, plus customs and security afterwards.

Times here are general rules of thumb from airline connection rules and LYVR's own walk-time and checkpoint data, not official minimums. Entry rules depend on your passport; confirm with the country's immigration authority and your airline before you travel.
