Rules of thumb

Short on time? Plan on at least 1 hour for a domestic connection, 1.5 to 2 hours for an international one, 2.5 to 3 hours arriving in the US from abroad, and 3 hours or more on separate tickets. The reasons are in how long should a layover be, and what happens if it goes wrong in missed a connecting flight. For your airport, see the airport layover guides.

Questions

Good to know.

How does the layover calculator work?

It adds up every step between landing and the boarding door closing: about 12 minutes to get off the plane, 30 for passport control, 20 for baggage claim, 20 for security, the walk to the gate, and doors that close 20 minutes before a domestic departure or 30 before an international one. Whatever's left is your time to spare. These are the same default times the LYVR app's planner starts from.

Is a 1 hour layover long enough?

For a domestic connection on one ticket, usually yes, if you stay in the same terminal. For an international arrival into the US it isn't: passport control, bags, customs and security again add up to about 2.1 hours before any delay.

Why is the result different from the airline's minimum connection time?

The minimum connection time is the shortest connection an airline will sell, the bare minimum when everything goes right. The calculator shows how much breathing room you'd have at typical waits.

Can I put the calculator on my website?

Yes. Copy the embed code on this page into any blog post or page. It's free, and the credit line links back to LYVR.
