Can you leave the airport during a layover? Usually, with enough time.
Yes, as long as you're allowed to enter that country, since leaving means passing through immigration. You also need enough time: as a rule of thumb, at least 6 hours on an international layover and 4 hours on a domestic one, so you're back at the airport about 2 hours (international) or 1 hour (domestic) before departure to clear security again.

What you need to leave
- The right to enter: a passport, plus any visa or electronic travel authorization that country requires for your nationality. Transit-only rules don't cover leaving the airport.
- A plan for your bags: on one ticket, checked bags usually go through to your final destination. On separate tickets you'll have to collect and recheck them.
- Time for both checkpoints: immigration on the way out, and security (sometimes emigration too) on the way back in.
- Transport you can count on: a train is more predictable than a taxi in rush-hour traffic.
How much time you really need
Work backwards from departure, and treat any number here as the least you'd want.
| Step | Domestic | International |
|---|---|---|
| Deplane and get out of the airport | 20–30 min | 45–90 min, with immigration |
| Travel into town and back | Depends on the airport | Depends on the airport |
| Be back at the airport before departure | About 1 hour | About 2 hours |
| Usual minimum layover to make it worthwhile | 4 hours | 6 hours |
Connecting in the United States
The US has no airside international transit. Every passenger arriving from abroad, even one connecting to another country, clears US passport control and customs, so you need a US visa or ESTA just to make the connection. That also means leaving the airport doesn't add a border check, only the time to get back through security.
Airports with good layover options
What's inside each airport, and what a connection there involves.
The rest of the answer.
Do I need a visa to leave the airport on a layover?
You need whatever that country requires for you to enter it, which may be a visa, an electronic travel authorization or nothing at all, depending on your passport. Check the country's official immigration site before you travel.
How long of a layover do I need to leave the airport?
As a rule of thumb, at least 6 hours on an international layover and 4 hours on a domestic one, and more at airports far from the city center. Plan to be back about 2 hours before an international departure.
What happens to my checked bags if I leave the airport?
On a single ticket, checked bags are usually sent through to your final destination, so you leave the airport with just your carry-on. On separate tickets, you collect your bags and check them in again.
Do I have to go through security again if I leave the airport?
Yes. Once you leave the secure area, you go through security again on the way back, and at international airports often passport control too.
Can I leave the airport on a layover in the US?
Yes. Every international arrival already clears US immigration and customs, so you can leave the airport as long as you have time to get back through TSA security.

Times here are general rules of thumb from airline connection rules and LYVR's own walk-time and checkpoint data, not official minimums. Entry rules depend on your passport; confirm with the country's immigration authority and your airline before you travel.
