Overnight layover: airport or hotel?
With under about 6 hours of night, stay airside: a lounge, a sleep pod or a transit hotel inside security saves the immigration line and the trip back. With more, a hotel near the airport usually buys a real night's sleep, as long as you're allowed to enter the country and your bags are checked through (pack what you need for the night in your carry-on).

Before you plan the night
- Bags: on one ticket, checked bags go through, so you won't have them. Carry a change of clothes and toiletries.
- Entry: leaving the airport means immigration. See transit visas and leaving the airport.
- Opening hours: some airports close terminals or checkpoints overnight, and the first security line of the morning can be long.
- Who pays: if a delay or cancellation strands you overnight, the airline may owe you a hotel (see missed connections). Some airlines, like Emirates and Turkish Airlines, also offer free or discounted hotels on long scheduled connections that meet their conditions.
How LYVR helps
LYVR lists the lounges you can actually get into at your connecting airport, their hours, sleep pods and spas near your gate, and the walk to each, so you can pick the spot that's open and close. With a long layover it also checks whether leaving is worth it, against your passport's entry rule.

The rest of the answer.
Can I sleep in the airport on an overnight layover?
Usually, yes, inside security, where many airports have quiet zones, sleep pods or a transit hotel. A few close parts of the terminal overnight, so check before you plan on the gate area.
Do I get my bags on an overnight layover?
Not on one ticket with bags checked through. Some airlines will short-check to the layover city on request, but plan on living out of your carry-on for the night.
Do I need a visa to stay in a hotel on an overnight layover?
For a hotel outside security, yes: you need whatever that country requires for you to enter. A transit hotel inside security doesn't need one.
Does the airline pay for a hotel on an overnight layover?
Not for a layover you booked, unless the airline has a program for long connections. If a delay or cancellation strands you overnight, the airline may owe you one, and must under EU261 and UK261.
What is a transit hotel?
A hotel inside the secure area of an airport, for connecting passengers who don't want to go through immigration. Rooms are often booked by the block of hours.
