TIPS Self-transfer

Self-transfer flights: cheaper, with the risk on you.

Short answer

A self-transfer (or self-connection) is a layover between two flights booked separately, often sold together by Google Flights, Kiwi.com or Skyscanner because it's cheaper. You collect your bags, check in again and go back through security, and if the first flight is late, the second airline doesn't have to wait or rebook you. Allow at least 3 hours domestic and 4 hours international.

Doing a self-transfer safely

  • Travel carry-on only if you can. Without checked bags you skip baggage claim and the bag drop, and can sometimes stay airside with a boarding pass for the second flight.
  • Check the entry rules for the connecting country: collecting bags means passing immigration, even on a short layover.
  • Check in online for the second flight before you leave, and note when its bag drop closes, often 45–60 minutes before departure.
  • Avoid the last flight of the day as your second flight, so a missed one isn't an overnight.
  • Get cover: travel insurance with missed-connection cover, or the booking site's own guarantee if it has one.
  • Watch for airport changes: some self-transfers switch airports, like JFK to LGA or LGW to LHR, which needs hours, not minutes.

How LYVR helps

Save both flights and LYVR pairs them into a layover even when they're on different tickets. It times the walk, shows live security waits for the line you'll re-clear, and counts down your real time to spare.

Questions people ask

The rest of the answer.

What does self transfer mean on Google Flights?

It means the itinerary is two separate tickets. You'll collect your bags, check in again and go through security at the connecting airport, and the airlines don't protect the connection.

Is a self-transfer flight safe?

It's legal and common, but riskier: if the first flight is late, you may miss the second with no free rebooking. A long layover, carry-on only and insurance make it much safer.

Do I need a visa for a self-transfer?

Often yes on an international self-transfer, because collecting bags and checking in again means passing immigration. Travelling carry-on only with a boarding pass for the second flight can sometimes let you stay airside.

How long should a self-transfer layover be?

At least 3 hours domestic and 4 hours international, and much more if you change airports or the first flight is often late.

What happens if I miss a self-transfer flight?

The second airline usually treats you as a no-show, so you buy a new ticket, unless your insurance or the booking site's guarantee covers it.

About these numbers

Times here are general rules of thumb from airline connection rules and LYVR's own walk-time and checkpoint data, not official minimums. Entry rules depend on your passport; confirm with the country's immigration authority and your airline before you travel.
